Arsenal is currently in negotiations with midfielder Granit Xhaka to extend his contract for another two years. Xhaka’s existing contract expires in 2024, but Arsenal has the option to extend it for an additional year. Both parties are eager to reach an agreement, and it is hoped that negotiations will be completed quickly.
Mikel Arteta views Xhaka as an important player and leader in the club’s dressing room. Xhaka is reportedly content with Arsenal and keen to commit to the club long-term, especially after their success in the Premier League this season. Following successful negotiations with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal has turned its attention to Xhaka’s contract extension.
GunnerBanana’s POV
Arsenal’s regular midfielders, including Partey (29), Jorginho (31), Xhaka (30), and Odegaard (24), have an average age of 28.5. While it is important to manage the club’s assets by extending players’ contracts, this approach can backfire, as seen with the case of Aubameyang, who was paid off to leave the club. This is a common issue with overpaid players in the Premier League, as few other clubs can afford their high wages. Unless they receive invitations to play desert football.
Therefore, GunnerBanana believes that Arsenal cannot afford to extend BOTH Elneny and Xhaka’s contracts and remain competitive for the Champion’s League next season.
Instead, the squad needs to be delicately rejuvenated by bringing in new, younger players who can play on the left side of Arteta’s midfield.
