Why nobody hates Man City

To clarify, I am a 40-year-old Asian residing in Singapore who has been a supporter of Arsenal since I turned 16 years old.

This was around the time when the English Premier League gained popularity in Singapore.

As I was relatively new to football and wanted to stand out from my male peers who were mostly Manchester United or Liverpool fans, I opted for Arsenal.

At that time, Arsenal appeared to be quite impressive to me, particularly with Bergkamp’s mesmerizing skills. When Henry joined the team a year later, the team’s performance seemed to improve, fortifying my loyalty to them.

In my class, there was a constant exchange of insults between Manchester United and Liverpool fans, with little regard for my presence as a minority supporting Arsenal.

It’s likely that they didn’t consider Arsenal to be a formidable opponent until we won the league in 1998.

Please bear in mind that these were teenagers who often did not have the opportunity to watch the matches on weekends.

I was curious about who would pay for and subscribe to watch the matches. My father was not definitely not interested, and we did not have internet access to stream anything.

I can understand how a boy from North London might choose a side to support during a local derby match between Arsenal and Spurs.

However, as Singaporeans, we don’t look anything like the individuals playing football on television.

So, how do we connect with them, and where does our irrational passion stem from?

Rivalry is fuelled because we h@te the fans of that club

The reason why rivalry exists is due to our animosity towards the fans of a particular club.

When someone asks, “Who supports Manchester United?” or “Who supports Liverpool?” it can lead to heightened emotions and competition.

Manchester City’s recent success has brought in a relatively young fan base. Therefore, I don’t have enough even City fans them to bear any animosity.

That’s why I don’t dislike Manchester City unless they do something that directly harms my club.

For instance, if they steal our players or manager, insult our club openly, or injure our star player.

However, even if they beat us badly, say 7-0, I won’t hold a grudge for long as we forget quickly in this sport.

I’ll be ecstatic if we win 1-0 the following weekend, regardless of who we face.

Which Premier League team do I dislike now?

I have to admit that I have developed a strong dislike towards Chelsea FC, primarily due to their conduct in the recent transfer window.

It is not difficult to guess why.

Their excessive spending of future funds and stretching their finances have irked me. Furthermore, the fact that they snatched Mudryk from Arsenal, just as he was on the brink of signing, has added to my resentment.

Eagerly waiting for them to either fail or go bankrupt.

In fact, I have such negative energy towards them that I need to go for a jog to get rid of it.

Talk later!
